At Presidio Golf Course, sustainability is not just an initiative — it is part of our responsibility as stewards of one of the country’s most historic and environmentally significant public spaces.
Working alongside the sustainability goals of the Presidio, our team is committed to reducing waste, conserving resources, and protecting the natural beauty and habitats that make the Presidio unique.
Waste Reduction & Recycling
Presidio Golf Course actively participates in the Presidio’s waste diversion and composting programs. Our team works daily to properly sort materials onsite to ensure waste is being directed into the correct recycling, compost, and landfill streams whenever possible.
Additional efforts include:
- Aluminum beverage containers replacing traditional plastic bottles whenever feasible
- Compostable to-go containers and food service packaging
- Staff training focused on proper waste sorting and diversion practices
- Continued evaluation of products and vendors to reduce single-use plastics
Water Conservation
Water conservation remains a major focus of our golf course maintenance practices.
Current initiatives include:
- Ongoing irrigation system upgrades designed to improve efficiency and reduce water usage
- Strategic hand-watering practices when appropriate
- Introduction of “no mow” naturalized areas to reduce irrigation demand and support native habitat growth
- Turf management practices focused on maintaining healthy playing conditions while minimizing unnecessary water consumption
These efforts help preserve resources while enhancing the natural character of the golf course and surrounding parkland.
Habitat & Environmental Stewardship
As part of a national park site, Presidio Golf Course operates under strict environmental standards and stewardship guidelines established by the Presidio Trust and federal agencies.
All pesticide and chemical applications follow approved federal and Presidio Trust protocols, with careful attention paid to environmental impact, safety, and responsible usage.
Our goal is to balance exceptional golf conditions with long-term environmental responsibility and habitat protection.
We are also actively working with toward certification as a Cooperative Sanctuary, a program focused on environmental stewardship, wildlife habitat enhancement, water conservation, and sustainable golf course management.
In addition, Presidio Golf Course has been nominated for the national Environmental Leaders in Golf Awards (ELGA), recognizing facilities demonstrating leadership and innovation in environmental practices within the golf industry.
Looking Forward
Sustainability is an ongoing process, and we continue to look for new ways to improve operations, reduce environmental impact, and support the broader mission of the Presidio.
We are proud to be part of a community that values conservation, stewardship, and the preservation of open space for future generations.
